A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
